A trip to South Africa to watch the World Cup has turned into a family tragedy for the family of Nicole Murphy. The Lafayette native and LSU med student was struck and killed by a hit and run driver while two of her siblings were also struck by the car.
The former University of Tampa women’s player was with her two brothers and father at the quadrennial event. Her brother was still in the hospital in critical condition.
“We’re not ok, my mom’s not ok, we’re strong for her,” Lauren Murphy told local TV station KATC.com. “Once he’s stable enough, we just found out that insurance isn’t going to cover any of these costs to get them back home, an ICU med jet is going to be in excess of hundreds of thousands to get my family back.”
To help with the cost to cover the medical expenses the family has set up a Murphy Family Support Fund.

“We’re just asking people for prayers and whatever they can give, just remember us and we just want to make sure our family gets back and we can lay our little sister to rest.”
